Program Overview:
The Financial Planning major is intended for the student interested in personal financial planning for individuals or families. Financial planning involves the management of financial resources to establish a goal of where a person would like to be in the future and develop a plan of how he or she can achieve that goal. The plans developed require a comprehensive approach that includes several areas of personal finance, including investments, insurance, retirement benefits, estate planning, personal taxes, and financial plan development. Students of the Financial Planning major are also strongly encouraged to develop a focus in Accounting/Taxation and/or Finance and/or Marketing beyond the foundational knowledge of Financial Planning.
The Financial Planning major will prepare students to enter the field of financial planning in organizations such as banks, credit unions, insurance companies, investment firms or accounting firms. Eventually, students may choose to establish their own private practice for financial planning.
The Financial Planning major curriculum meets the educational requirement for certification with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board) and qualifies students to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination, administered by the CFP Board.

Program Requirements:
The Financial Planning major at the College of Saint Rose offers a curriculum that complies with the educational requirement of the CFP® certification.* The Financial Planning major is built on a solid foundational knowledge of accounting and business. All Financial Planning majors develop a comprehensive understanding in the various functional areas of accounting and business by completing the Accounting and Business Requirements; they develop a focus in financial planning by completing the Financial Planning Requirements; and they develop a further specialized interest by completing the Electives Requirements.
Normally, once a student has matriculated in the Financial Planning major at The College of Saint Rose, he or she must satisfy all remaining major requirements with Saint Rose courses. Likewise, students pursuing the Financial Planning minor must satisfy all requirements for the minor with Saint Rose courses.

*CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM are certification marks owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. These marks are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements. The College of Saint Rose does not certify individuals to use the CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM. CFP certification is granted only by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience and examination requirements.

***Arts and science electives include courses from the arts and sciences that may or may not have Liberal Education designation. Courses taken in professional fields such as accounting, business, nursing, education, medical technology or engineering are generally not recognized as arts and sciences for this requirement. Students must consult with their advisors in selecting these courses.
****Additional credits include any courses offered or accepted by The College of Saint Rose that can be applied toward the 122 credit hour graduation requirement.

MAT 184 Elementary Statistics as an arts and science elective. Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better in all courses required for the 60-credit Financial Planning major.

A study abroad option is available to interested students who want to spend a semester at an approved college or university in another country. The approved courses taken will count toward the Business degree.

The College of Saint Rose, sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province, is chartered by the Board of Regents of New York State. All of its degrees and programs are registered and its professional programs fully approved by the Board of Regents through New York State Education Department.

Admissions and Financial Aid Information:
The Undergraduate Admissions Office begins review of Freshman applications each fall in late September for the following Fall. Students are encouraged to submit a complete an application as early as November. The Admissions Team will return a decision on complete applications within just three weeks. The College awards academic scholarships at the same time.
