SED 528 Fostering Family-School Part
The course is designed to provide candidates with the skills and dispositions necessary to work with families in our increasingly diverse and multicultural society. Emphasis is placed upon understanding the family system perspective, especially as it relates to families with children who have disabilities or who come from different economic and cultural experiences. Understanding one?s own background and values and how this affects one?s responses to families who express different viewpoints regarding disability, child rearing, behavior, schooling, and independence is a core outcome of this course. Candidates will also develop an awareness of community resources available to families with diverse needs within our immediate community. Candidates will develop skills in problem solving, reflective listening, and conflict resolution while working with a parent group in the community. A 10-hour filed experience is required. Prerequisite: Fingerprint clearance. Spring. (3 credits)
