SED 515 Includ Stdnts w/ Disabilities

This course is designed to assist pre-service educators in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will facilitate the successful participation of students with disabilities in their classrooms. Content will focus on the legal, historical and cultural context for special education services and inclusive practices including specific policies and procedures mandated within New York State. Students will come to understand their roles and responsibilities for collaboration and teaming with special educators, related service personnel, administrators, and family members in the pre-referral interventions, referral to the Committee on Special Education, and the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans. Students will develop an understanding of the variation within and across disability categories, the impact of disability on classroom performance, and potential environmental, curricular, instructional, testing, grading and social accommodations and adaptations that can be used to support students with disabilities in general education settings. A 10-hour field experience arranged by the instructor is required. Required number of hours vary dependent on course design. Fall, Spring, Summer. (3 credits)
