This course surveys European history from ancient Rome through the Hundred Years War. Themes and topics include: rise and fall of the Roman Empire and its historical legacies, the emergence and spread of Christianity, establishment of the Church and papacy, monastic culture, the Byzantine and Islamic Empires, Carolingian Europe, feudalism, the birth of universities and the liberal arts curriculum, the of origins modern political institutions and sovereign states.
