HIS 202 Women in European History

In this course we will explore history through the lived experiences and conceptions of woman and gender that have shaped and been shaped by Western history. We will survey the historiography of women and gender and examine historical events and developments through the lens of women's lives in ancient, medieval, and modern Europe, drawing on both secondary and primary sources written by and about women (and men). A focus on women gives deep insight into different societies and cultures, providing a richer understanding of the present as well as the past. Students will gain from this course an in depth understanding of the changing lives, conditions and social conceptions of women in history, how gender organized power and social meaning in history, and the analytical utility of gender as a window onto the past.
