Accounting – BS

Program Overview:

The 122-hour Accounting major is designed to prepare students for positions in accounting, internal auditing, taxation, budgeting, and cost control. Graduates meet the educational requirements for taking the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination in New York State. However, New York State requires 150 credit hours for new practitioners to be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant. Graduates of this program are well prepared for graduate work in accounting. In addition, this curriculum allows students to gain a focus in Data Analysis, Economics, Finance or Mathematics.

The minimum credit requirement for the Bachelor of Science in Accounting at The College of Saint Rose is 122 credits, which consists of the following:

Accounting Courses 33 credits
General Business Courses 27 credits
College-wide Liberal Education requirements 41 credits
Additional Liberal and General Education electives* 21 credits
Total 122 credits


*The number of credits required for the Additional Liberal and General Education electives may vary. The requirement is that the total number of credits for Liberal Education and General Education Electives must be no less than 60; and that the Accounting major requires 122 credit hour for graduation.

Additional Requirements, Prerequisites, and Recommendations

In compliance with the requirement by the State of New York, an Accounting major must take at least 60 credit hours in liberal and general education. MAT 180 College Algebra, MAT 184 Statistics or ECO 280 Business Statistics,  and CSC 114 Excel, or their equivalents, should be taken in the first or sophomore year because these courses form an essential knowledge base for upper-level major courses. Courses fulfilling the requirement of Additional Liberal and General Education Electives can include courses that may or may not have Liberal Education designation. Courses taken in professional fields such as nursing, education, medical technology, or engineering are generally not recognized as Liberal Education courses for this requirement.

Students must earn a cumulative index of 2.0 or better in all courses required for the Accounting major.

Suggested 4 Year Course Plan:

This suggested plan is designed to give students an idea of how to balance their coursework over 8 semesters and to graduate within 4 years. Most students will need to take a minimum of 30 credits each year in order to meet the graduation requirement of a minimum of 122 overall credits.  It should be used along with your Degree Works worksheet and in consultation with your faculty advisor. The Undergraduate Admissions Office begins review of First-Year applications each fall in late September for the following Fall. Students are encouraged to submit a complete application as early as October. The Admissions Team will return a decision on complete applications within just three weeks. The College awards academic scholarships at the same time.
