AHI 285 Renaissance Art

This course explores themes in European art between 1300 and 1560, focusing primarily (but not exclusively) on art and architecture produced in Italy during this period. In addition to providing a familiarity with Renaissance art, this course will focus on the development of critical reading and thinking skills. Classes will consist of lectures, student presentations, and discussions in which students will be expected to actively participate in critical assessment and discussion of assigned scholarly texts. Students will also be encouraged to consider Renaissance art using contemporary theory and make connections between Renaissance approaches to art and more current ones, including in their own work and studio practice. This course will require one all-day Saturday field trip, which is covered by the course fee. Prerequisites: AHI 101, AHI 208 or permission of instructor.
