HIS 536 Gender, Colonialism, and the Family Economy in West Africa, 1860-Present

This course examines continuity and change in gender roles from the pre-colonial period to the present, defining gender as a social construct. The main themes that will be explored include production and reproduction; gender, knowledge, and rituals of transformation; family structure and the allocation of productive resources within it, gendered experiences of colonialism, conflicts over marriage and divorce, widowhood and systems of inheritance in Africa.
