PSY 290 Thanatology

An academic study of adaptation to separation and loss in human development. Emphasis on death as the ultimate loss. Topics include attachment and loss throughout the life cycle; grief, mourning, and bereavement; disenfranchised grief; anticipatory grief; parental grief; complicated mourning; helping the bereaved cope; nearing-death awareness; the symbolic language of dying; hospice care; aid in dying; children's concept of death; children's grief; the terminally-ill child.
