AHI 376 Latin American Art since Independence

A study of 19th, 20th, and 21st century Latin American art in relation to changing social and political climates. Particular focus is given to Mexico and the northern half of South America (Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela) in order to develop awareness of the complex differences between and within countries of Latin America. Post-colonial themes, such as the rise of nationalism, the struggle for indigenous rights, and the effects of globalization, are discussed in relation to style, iconography, and social function of various media including public monuments and murals.
