SEC 372 Literacy&Tch Wrtg Sec Sch

In relation to state and national standards as well as the recommendations of national professional organizations, this course focuses on research- and theory-based frameworks and strategies for teaching writing to adolescent learners with a wide range of backgrounds, including those who are English learners and those with special needs. Teacher candidates explore both classic and current approaches to the development of literacy in composition, rhetoric, and language, focusing in particular on structural analysis of non-fiction texts in relation to audience, purpose, and context. They explore the teaching of syntax, grammar, mechanics, and usage as elements about which writers make choices in context. They develop understanding of formative assessment techniques for learning.  A 7-hour field experience is required for the Adolescence Education and ASPIRE Programs. Students must obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning field experiences. For undergraduate single certification Adolescence Education, the required pre-requisite is SEC 371 and the required co-requisite is SEC 365: Curriculum & Instruction in English in Secondary Schools.
