CJS 338 Adv Substantive Crim Law
This course builds on material covered in CJS 238 as well as introducing several more complex topics of domestic substantive criminal law. The crime of criminal homicide; murder, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and depraved mind murder will be explored along with the defenses of extreme emotional disturbance (EED) and insanity. In addition crimes against public order and decency (obscenity, prostitution, intoxicated driving) and crimes against government including domestic terrorism will be discussed. Use of the death penalty as punishment will also be explored. The course will be taught using a modified law school model involving the reading and briefing of appellate decisions from various jurisdictions to introduce and/or illustrate the topics and concepts being addressed. Prerequisite: CJS 238. Spring
