CSL 538 Addictions Counseling

This course provides students with the fundamentals of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning in addictions counseling. An overview of the history of alcohol and drug use, eating disorders, and process addictions in the United States, specific drug classifications, and evidence-based treatment approaches are presented. Students will understand the complex dynamics of addiction and co-occurring disorders and their effects on children, adolescents, and adults. Multiple addiction models will be introduced. Addiction within family systems and across generations will be explored.. Students are exposed to 12-step and self-help groups in the community and psycho-educational groups in schools. Emphasis will be placed on counseling diverse populations and the CASAC certification requirements. Spring.
