ENG 223 Early Amer Literature

Critical study of English-language literature of colonial North America and/or US before 1865, possibly with transatlantic or hemispheric purview.  Focus may be on selected author(s) (Poe, the Transcendentalists), genre (sentimental novel, captivity narrative, the Gothic), cultural or historical context (literature of abolition, the city), or another topic. This course may be taken more than once, provided it addresses a different topic when taken again. (L04)
