MUS 140 Guitar Lit/Fretboard Harmony
A course designed for the classical guitarist, (though no exclusive), to provide an overview, through listening, as well as performance of the guitar literature from the Renaissance to the present day. The focus will be on composers, repertoire, and performance practices of these different styles. Additionally, the Fretboard Harmony component will use this specific repertoire to develop practical application of performance on the guitar through transcriptions, figured bass realization on the guitar, sight reading skills and strategies, as well as practical contemporary and Jazz harmony performance practices. The course will be best set up as a two semester performance cycle with the Fall semester focusing on repertoire from the Renaissance through the Baroque and the Spring will focus on Classical through the present day. The classes will not necessarily have to be taken contiguously though this may yield the greatest benefit to the student.
