SEC 371 Literacy/Liter Mid/Sec Schools
This course is designed to prepare students to develop language and literacy skills in pupils in middle and secondary schools in accordance with standards for the English Language Arts posed by New York State and by professional literacy organizations (NCTE and IRA). The use of all types of texts for adolescents and young adults in content area instruction is emphasized, as well as reading and writing in the content areas, across the curriculum. The development of pupils? study and investigative skills is addressed, particularly in regard to the use of information technologies and the critical evaluation of the information obtained. Students will develop skills for assessing pupils' abilities and needs. Strategies and methods for adapting literacy instruction in the content areas to meet the needs of pupils with the full range of abilities, including pupils whose native language is other than English, will be examined. Methods for collaborating with reading specialists and other special educators will be addressed. A 10-hour field experience is required. Students must obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning field experiences. Fall, Spring*English: Adolescence Education majors may take this course for two credits rather than four credits because of extensive coverage of the English Language Arts in their major courses.
