SEC 365 Curriculum/Instruct 7-12

This course is designed to enable Adolescence Education students to develop knowledge and skills in the development of curriculum and instruction. Students will complete a 25-hour field experience and analyze that experience with regard to the major components of the teaching process: curriculum, instructional planning, presentation and implementation skills, management, assessment, and motivation. Research-based instructional models and strategies for teaching learners with the full range of abilities will be examined and implemented in field experiences. There will be an emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking across the curriculum, and on the use of all types of texts (i.e., textbooks, trade books, periodicals, student-generated texts) to engage pupils in the curriculum. Such topics as the demographics and sociology of the classroom, community-school relations, curriculum modifications for learners with exceptionalities, IEPs, parental involvement, technology, gender equity, service learning, and professional development will also be addressed. Students will receive the initial guidance for the development of their professional portfolios. Students must obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning field experiences. Open only to majors at Saint Rose. Not open to freshmen or sophomores. One credit of literacy is embedded in this course.Fall, Spring
