HIS 272 American Dreams

In this course students analyze the historical conceptualization of the American Dream cross-culturally from the 19th through the 20th centuries by interpreting primary source materials and synthesizing scholarly publications (in exams that assess historical content and in thesis-driven evidence-based historical arguments). Students will learn how different generations have articulated and critiqued the American Dream and the ways in which federal and state policies have affected patterns of social and economic mobility by controlling access to resources, expanding consumer credit, and expanding or restricting citizenship. Fulfills diversity requirement. (L03)
