HIS 225 New York State History

In this course students examine and discuss the commercial, productive, and demographic transformations which led to the modernization of New York State. Students will acquire and demonstrate historical knowledge on the various ways that New York functioned as the nation?s center for finance, social diversity, industrialization, transportation, machine politics, cultural innovation, vice, and social reform. [Using thesis-driven evidence-based arguments,] students will critically analyze, from diverse points of view, how collective efforts to expand production and to safeguard public interests established New York as a state noted for both liberal reform and, paradoxically, promoted the violation of civil liberties and exacerbated income inequality.
