CJS 430 Punishment
This advanced theoretical course will explore the history and ideology of punishment. Readings of Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish, and David Garland's Punishment and Modern Society will be examined in-depth in order to provide an understanding why people punish. In addition to exploring the rationale of the need for punishment in society, the historical social context of methods and symbolism of punishment will also be studied. Prerequisite: CJS 231.
