BIO 180 Introduction to Microbiology

This course is designed to give the students insight into the fundamentals of microbiology - an exciting field extending into multiple aspects of our lives including disease prevention and treatment, agriculture and food science, ecology and biotechnology. The course consists of two parts: Lectures (70%) and Labs (30%). The aim of the lecture portion of this course is to introduce students to the science of microbiology as both a basic and applied biological discipline, with the emphasis on cell structure, physiology, molecular biology of microorganisms, microbe pathogenicity, interaction with the human immune system, infectious disease, disease prevention and diagnosis. The Lab portion of the course designed to introduce students to fundamental techniques and practical aspects of microbiology, such as microscopic observations, aseptic transfer, microorganism classification and identification, environmental factors influencing growth of microorganisms, biochemistry of microorganisms, and medical microbiology.
