ENG 555 Victorian Literature and Culture
Study of selected writers, ranging from more popular writers (such as the Brownings, Dickens, Christina Rossetti, Tennyson, Trollope) to writers usually associated with certain genres (Braddon, Collins, Haggard) and intellectual trends (Arnold, Eliot, Darwin, Ruskin). A semester’s course readings may include a combination of fiction, prose, and poetry within the parameters of a particular historical, aesthetic, or socioeconomic theme. Examination of the critical and popular reception of each writer and his/her work(s) will be supplemented by readings about audience and readership during this period. (3 credits)
