POS 364 The Politics of AIDS

This course will explore a range of issues surrounding the politics of the AIDS pandemic, including conflicts around prevention and drug policies; discrimination (race and gender) and human rights; and international (non)cooperation. Assigned readings will offer some theoretical background, case studies and historical perspectives, as well as introduce students to the types of research in the field of HIV/AIDS, broadly defined. Some of the questions to be considered in the course are: How do the politics of ethnicity, gender, and geography shape responses to HIV/AIDS? What role do global hierarchies play in the concentration of the pandemic in certain geographic regions? What is the role of knowledge and power in the prevention debate? Fulfills writing-intensive and diversity requirement. Prerequisite: POS 171 or 173 (CP) Fall
