SEC 520 Methods of Teaching English in the Secondary School

The course provides candidates with practical approaches to implementing New York State Learning Standards for the English/Language Arts, addressing the teaching of reading literary and informational texts, writing to sources for varied purposes and audiences, speaking and listening, and media literacy. The course focuses on curriculum, instruction, and assessment in the context of teaching for social justice. Candidates develop the ability to create instructional plans that integrate technologies as well as literacy and inclusion strategies. Appropriate classroom accommodations and modifications for pupils with the full range of abilities are examined through course work and field experiences. A 20-hour field experience is required. Students must obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning field experiences. Prerequisite: SEC 515. Fall, Spring.
