ELE 563 Literature for Literacy Development, Grades 1-6

In this course, students will develop knowledge of children's literature and will consider how literature can be used with children to enhance their cognitive, linguistic, aesthetic, and literacy development. Topics include engaging teachers and children with literature, evaluating and selecting literature for children, literature response, the literary genres and elements, the history and controversies related to literature for children, connecting digital literacies and literature, state and national standards for the teaching of literature, and methods for teaching with literature across the curriculum. A seven-hour field experience is required. Students must obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning field experiences. Fall.
