CJS 232 Policing in a Free Society

Using the nomenclature in the field of policing, this course focuses on police organization, function, and issues. Students delve into the idea that responding to crime in a free society requires police to adhere to constraints on their power that are enumerated in the Bill of Rights amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Lectures and assignments address how English policing influenced the development of American policing, the organization model of modern American police departments, the role of the police, the various operational styles of policing, and the specific Constitutional amendments that constrain police actions.
